Tips to Reduce Dandruff

Dandruff is a common scalp condition that affects millions, and you’re not alone in your battle. This page is your friendly guide to reducing those itchy and unsightly flakes.

What is Dandruff?

Winter is upon us, and with it comes dreaded dandruff. Dandruff is a skin condition that causes an itchy & flaking scalp. Severe cases are known as Seborrheic Dermatitis.

Not all dandruff is the same; different types demand distinct approaches. Identifying the root cause behind your flakes is crucial for finding the appropriate remedy. The Malassezia fungus, thriving on scalp oils, accelerates cell shedding and is a common culprit. Meanwhile, dryness and sensitivity, triggered by factors like hair products or the environment, can also lead to flaking and itching.

Hair Care Tips to Reduce Dandruff

Dandruff can sometimes be embarrassing but don’t fret! Here are some ways you can help to control it:

  • When shampooing your hair, make sure you use cool water. Hot water can dry out your scalp & skin even more.
  • Apply your shampoo and conditioner evenly from mid-strand to the ends of your hair. Make sure you are not applying to much product to just one area of the scalp.
  • Also, washing your hair too often can strip the scalp of its natural oils that help to keep it moisturized.
  • Last but certainly not least, using professional shampoos and conditioners will also help to control dandruff. Drug store and off the shelf shampoo and conditioners contain a high amount of wax and alcohol that concentrate the supply of their product in the bottle, which can clog the pores on the scalp.

Natural Remedies to Fight Off Dandruff

  • Aloe vera: Aloe vera can calm the itch and scalp irritation. Apply directly to the scalp, or choose shampoos and conditioners infused with aloe.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Diluted apple cider vinegar can help restore the scalp’s natural pH balance and reduce fungal growth. Use a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water as a rinse after shampooing, leaving it on for a few minutes before rinsing again.
  • Tea tree oil: This essential oil helps with antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a potent weapon against dandruff. Dilute a few drops in your shampoo or conditioner, or apply directly to the scalp.
