Talking with Industry Professionals

My name is Lisa Shelburg and I’ve been with KJ & Company for the past 27 years, but I’ve been doing hair and nails for 34 years.

Originally, I come from South Dakota and went to school there. I’ve always wanted to do hair and it was a concern of mine starting out thinking how I was going to make money. I learned very quickly that if you want to be a hairstylist you must commit fully and that means that you must work the nights and you have to work the weekends because that’s when the majority of your customers have the time to come in and see you. So, with doing that, and of course as time goes on, being that I have been doing hair for 24 years, I can now adjust my schedule. I feel more now that I have a 9-5 job. It will only work if you work it.

You meet a lot of cool people, and you get to have lots of conversations. Some nights my husband would get upset with me because he’s learned something on the news. I am obviously at work and am not watching the news, but I’ve already heard about it. He gets a little frustrated with me because he wants to be the first to tell me and I’m like, ‘I do talk to people during the day’.

You just make relationships with your customers and with your coworkers. You do everything you can to help your coworkers. Whether they need to work on a haircut in between their color or you shampoo their color for them. It’s that little extra time to help them put in an additional service on their books for the day and they will do it for you as well.

As far as money goes, I think it’s important to visit with your clientele and see if you can expand on their services that will build more of your paycheck. A lot of people come in for just a haircut but if you introduce them to color, then that’s a great way of changing their style without cutting their hair shorter. Doing eyebrows or anything to upsell will show on your paycheck and I feel like your customers do appreciate that.
