Dual-Credit Cosmetology Program for High School Students: What You Need to Know

Are you still in high school and are interested in a career in cosmetology? You don’t have to wait till graduation to find out! La’ James International College (LJIC) has partnered with Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) to offer a dual-credit cosmetology program that allows high school students to earn college credit, gain hands-on experience, and explore the beauty industry while still in school.

Recently announced, this program removes financial barriers and gives motivated students a head start toward a professional cosmetology career. Below, we break down how the program works, who it’s for, and why it’s a unique opportunity for students interested in beauty, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

An Opportunity to Start a Cosmetology Career Early

One of the most important features of this program is that there is no cost to students. Tuition, textbooks, and required kit items are all provided through La’ James International College, making this an accessible option for families looking to explore career-focused education without financial strain.

The program is designed primarily for high school juniors and seniors, though enrollment may also be available to other individuals interested in cosmetology, depending on eligibility and space. By participating, students can begin building professional skills and confidence long before graduation.

Earn College Credit While Still in High School

Students enrolled in the program will complete two ICCC-accredited cosmetology courses, earning college credits that apply toward a future Cosmetology program at La’ James International College.

COS108: Theory of Hair and Hair Care Services I

This introductory course lays the groundwork for a successful cosmetology career. Students are introduced to the science of hair, salon services, and professional expectations in the beauty industry. Coursework combines structured classroom learning with weekly labs, virtual guest speakers, and hands-on campus visits at LJIC.

In addition to technical knowledge, students begin developing career-readiness skills such as retailing and recommending professional products to clients, an essential part of modern salon success.

COS109: Theory of Hair and Hair Care Services II

Building on the foundation of COS108, this course dives deeper into core cosmetology services. Students explore haircutting, hairstyling, hair color, and chemical texture services while learning to distinguish between chemical and non-chemical treatments.

COS109 also introduces key business concepts, helping students understand best practices for retailing, referrals, and rebooking. These skills are critical for building long-term success in the cosmetology industry, whether working in a salon or pursuing entrepreneurship.

Hands-On Training at La’ James International College

The program also includes real, hands-on experience. Students will participate in three on-campus visits at La’ James International College, all scheduled on Thursdays. During these visits, students train in a professional cosmetology school environment under the guidance of experienced instructors.

These campus experiences give students a clear picture of what cosmetology education and salon life are really like, helping them make informed decisions about their future.

Textbooks, Kits, and Dress Code

All required textbooks and kit items needed for weekly lab work are provided by La’ James International College. Students will also receive surprise goody bags, adding an extra element of excitement to the experience.

For on-campus visits, students are required to follow a professional dress code. La’ James International College provides an LJIC activewear shirt, which must be worn with black pants and black shoes to maintain a consistent, professional learning environment.

How to Enroll and What Comes Next

The program is open to any high school student interested in starting cosmetology classes while still in high school. To get started, students should complete this form.

After high school graduation, students who wish to continue their education can take the next step by contacting La’ James International College directly. The LJIC admissions team will guide graduates through enrollment into upcoming Cosmetology classes, allowing them to complete their training and move closer to licensure and a professional career.

Why This Program Matters

We really love working with our students and wanted to provide a new way for high schoolers who are interested in our programs to engage with us sooner, learn in a hands-on setting about this career path and build relationships with us. This dual-credit cosmetology program allows us to do these things: it’s a new pathway for students to explore their passion, earn college credit, and gain real experience without financial risk. Through our collaboration with Iowa Central Community College, we believe the students will receive a high-quality educational experience that blends theory, practice, and career preparation.
