Shantina was working at a daycare while taking care of her daughter when she decided to explore a Cosmetology career.  “I love doing hair and making people feel good about themselves.  I had a friend from my home town who attended La’ James International College so I decided to explore opportunities at LJIC.  I looked at another school in Waterloo but I ultimately chose LJIC because it was a family environment; I felt at home with the instructors and my class mates. I have made lifelong friends.”

“I remember my first haircut!! Oh my goodness!!! I was so nervous to go from a mannequin to an actual person! I collected my thoughts and I finished the haircut and it turned out GREAT! I wondered why was I so freaked out?!? It helped that my instructors helped me feel confident and comfortable too.”

Eventually Shantina wants to open her own salon “anywhere warm” and wants to get involved in more hair competition. “While I was a student I was a model for the Midwest Beauty School Competition; it was my first competition and I didn’t know what to expect.  It opened my eyes and mind to all the things possible for me in this industry.” Shantina also went on to compete at LJIC Trend Vision and CBI student competition as a student.  “It was so inspiring to see everyone’s imagination and perspectives.”

Shantina advice to future Cosmetologist or future students, “Don’t be afraid to think outside the box the more you do the more you will learn; be willing to go above and beyond the box.”
